As part of the study, it was observed that those who suppressed their anger and other negative emotions were thrice as likely to feel that they could not achieve anything more from their career. These people were also likely to have disappointing personal lives. However, those who dealt with their anger and stress in a constructive manner by channelling these emotions in the right direction usually ended up doing well in their careers as well as having a happier emotional relationship in their private lives.
Professor George Vaillant, the head of the research team says that humans have a variety of negative emotions, many of which are essential for survival. These emotions make a person focus on critical issues, rather than worry about irrelevant details. However, he warns that if these emotions are let out in an uncontrolled manner they commonly result in having an adverse effect on the situation. Thus, it is critical that people do not suppress their anger at work; instead, they should learn how to express it constructively and use it to their advantage.
