How Computer Classes Can Further Your Career in Portland, ME

May 29th, 2009

I found myself back on the job market earlier this year, so I decided to take some computer classes, just to brush up on my word processing and e-mail skills. Being unemployed, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on this pursuit, so I enrolled in a few free computer classes at the Portland Public Library. They offer introductory Internet classes for all library members, as well as general word processing and Outlook / e-mail skills courses.

It didn’t take me long to find some work, but it was only a part-time job as a receptionist at a local interactive advertising agency. The only way to move up in this company would be to learn more about web applications and using Microsoft Visual Studio. I have a background in graphic design and attended school for this many years ago, so I decided to enroll in some advanced classes and develop some marketable skills in Web site structure, user interfaces and CMS implementation.

My new boss suggested I enroll at VTEC Education Center. That was where he learned web design, and he is now the agency’s creative director. So I signed up for some advanced classes, starting with a three-day workshop to develop my skills in web application development. This experience led to my interest in becoming a Microsoft certified technology specialist, so I took some additional courses, and I am now well on my way to a new career. Surprisingly, it isn’t as difficult as I thought it would be, and the best part is, I have been promised a promotion as soon as I am certified.

So, if you’re back on the job market and want to find a rewarding career in the IT field, I highly recommend you refine your computer skills and determine if there is a new career for you in the field of technology.
